What Medicare covers in an inpatient rehabilitation facility
Medicare.gov says inpatient rehabilitation can help a person recovering from a serious surgery, illness or injury who needs an intensive rehabilitation therapy program, physician supervision, and coordinated care from doctors and other health care providers (including therapists).
- Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers medically necessary care in an inpatient rehabilitation facility or unit (also called an inpatient “rehab” facility, IRF, acute care rehabilitation center or rehabilitation hospital). Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) covers doctors' services during the stay.
- Covered care includes rehabilitation services (physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language pathology), a semi-private room, meals, nursing services, prescription drugs, and other hospital services and supplies.
- Medicare doesn't cover private duty nursing, a phone or television in the room (if charged separately), personal items (except those given as part of the hospital admission pack), or a private room unless it is medically necessary.
- The patient's health care provider must certify a medical condition that requires intensive rehabilitation, continued medical supervision and coordinated care.
What the patient pays each benefit period in 2026, according to Medicare.gov:
- Days 1–60: $0 a day, after the $1,736 deductible.
- Days 61–90: $434 a day.
- Days 91–150: $868 a day while using lifetime reserve days (60 days in total, usable once in a lifetime).
- After day 150: all costs.
Medicare.gov says the deductible isn't charged again if it was already charged for a prior hospital stay in the same benefit period, for example when the patient is transferred directly from an acute care hospital or admitted within 60 days of leaving a hospital.
