Este informe también está en español.

Across the 13,891 nursing homes that reported nurse staffing in both the Oct 2023 and the Sep 2026 data files, the average reported total nurse staffing was 3.77 hours per resident per day in the Oct 2023 file (staffing from April 1 to June 30, 2023) and 3.85 hours in the Sep 2026 file (January 1 to March 31, 2026), a change of +0.07 hours (calculated before rounding). This is a simple average: each home counts once, whatever its size.

Hours of nurse staffing per resident per day (registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nurse aides). The change is calculated before rounding. The "United States" row covers the homes in all the rows above.

How we calculated this

  • Field: "Reported Total Nurse Staffing Hours per Resident per Day", which CMS's data dictionary describes as "Reported Total Nurse Staffing - Hours per Resident per Day (Aide+LPN+RN)". These are the hours as reported, not the case-mix adjusted hours CMS uses for the staffing rating.
  • How CMS calculates it: nurse staffing hours from the Payroll-Based Journal system and the daily resident census are each summed over a quarter, and the hours are divided by the census.
  • Months compared: the Oct 2023 Provider Information file (from CMS's archive) and the Sep 2026 file (the latest one this site uses). Each monthly file carries CMS's figure for a recent quarter, not for that calendar month: CMS's data collection interval files give April 1 to June 30, 2023 for the Oct 2023 file and January 1 to March 31, 2026 for the Sep 2026 file.
  • Homes included: the 13,891 homes with a value in both files, so both averages describe the same homes. Left out: 799 of the 14,690 homes in the Sep 2026 file, because one of the two files has no value for them (the home is not in the Oct 2023 file, or CMS reported no staffing hours for it in one of the two months).
  • Average: a simple average across homes, not weighted by the number of residents.
  • Each home is counted in the state listed for it in the Sep 2026 Provider Information file. The table has a row for each place where that file lists homes: 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico.
