How we calculated this
- Fields: "Reported Total Nurse Staffing Hours per Resident per Day" (all days) and "Total number of nurse staff hours per resident per day on the weekend" (weekends), from the same Provider Information file.
- How CMS calculates them: hours from the Payroll-Based Journal system divided by the resident census, each summed over a quarter. For the weekend figure both are summed over Saturdays and Sundays only. The all-days figure includes weekends.
- Month: the Sep 2026 Provider Information file, whose staffing figures cover January 1 to March 31, 2026 (CMS data collection interval file). This is a snapshot, not a comparison over time.
- Homes included: the 14,351 homes with both values in that file, so both averages describe the same homes.
- Average: a simple average across homes, not weighted by the number of residents.
- Each home is counted in the state listed for it in the Sep 2026 Provider Information file. The table has a row for each place where that file lists homes: 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico.
